After 13 Years, Arnold Schwarzenegger Opens Up About the Affair That Ended His Marriage // After 13 years of guarded comments and brief apologies, Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally opened up in raw detail about the affair that ended his 25‑year marriage

After 13 years of guarded comments and brief apologies, Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally opened up in raw detail about the affair that ended his 25‑year marriage to Maria Shriver—and the way he frames it now is less about politics or image, and more about the simple, painful truth:

he destroyed one of Hollywood’s most admired unions with his own choices. In a recent interview, the 76‑year‑old talks about his 1996 relationship with longtime family housekeeper Mildred Baena, which resulted in a son, Joseph, born just days after his youngest child with Shriver, and the years he spent hiding that reality from his wife.

Schwarzenegger admits he knew the truth long before it became public, confessing that he watched Joseph grow and gradually saw his own features in the boy. “The older he got, the more it became clear to me,” he said. “And then it was just, ‘How do you keep this quiet?’ Turns out, you don’t.” When Shriver confronted him in counseling, asking point‑blank whether he was the father, he finally answered honestly: “Yes, Maria, Joseph is my son.” The moment shattered their marriage and triggered an emotional earthquake that rippled through both their families.

He calls the affair “the biggest mistake” of his life, one he cannot rationalize or spin. “It was a major, major screwup,” he said. “I caused immense pain to Maria and unimaginable distress to the kids. I can’t blame anyone else.” Yet he also insists he still loves Shriver, describing her as “extraordinary” and expressing guilt that she “did not deserve that.”
