Prince William may take a firmer approach toward the monarchy once he eventually becomes king. While no official action has been taken, royal commentators and media insiders continue to debate whether the children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could face changes to their royal roles in the future.
Archie and Lilibet officially received prince and princess titles after the accession of King Charles III in 2022, in accordance with long-standing royal rules established under King George V. Despite holding those titles, the young royals are not working members of the British Royal Family and currently live in California with their parents.
Recent speculation intensified after several royal experts suggested that Prince William is focused on creating a “slimmed-down monarchy” centered on senior working royals. According to commentators, this vision could eventually limit the public roles, privileges, or official recognition associated with non-working royals, including Archie and Lilibet. However, constitutional experts note that removing royal titles or changing succession-related matters would require significant legal and royal procedures, making any immediate action unlikely.
Supporters of Prince Harry and Meghan argue that ongoing public discussion about their children’s titles unfairly places Archie and Lilibet in the middle of wider tensions within the royal family. Others believe the debate reflects broader questions about how the monarchy will modernize in the years ahead.
Neither Kensington Palace nor Buckingham Palace has issued statements suggesting that Archie or Lilibet’s royal status is under review. At present, both children remain officially recognized as prince and princess.
