Their performances as Baby and Johnny became iconic, but the two stars were not always comfortable with each other during production.
Grey and Swayze had already worked together on Red Dawn in 1984, and their personalities had clashed. When they reunited for Dirty Dancing, Grey initially had doubts about whether Swayze was the right romantic partner for her character. She later described their relationship as a kind of “oil and water” dynamic, saying they were both trying to assert themselves.
One particularly awkward moment involved a dance scene in which Swayze had to touch Grey around her side. Grey repeatedly burst into laughter because she was extremely ticklish. Choreographer Kenny Ortega later recalled that Swayze became visibly frustrated during the repeated takes. Ironically, that genuine tension became part of what made the scene feel authentic on screen.
But there was another secret Grey was dealing with: she was genuinely nervous about the famous final lift. Unlike the effortless confidence Baby displays in the movie, Grey was frightened by the idea of being lifted above Swayze’s head. She ultimately performed the move for the cameras without extensive rehearsal, and her emotional reaction in the finished scene was completely genuine.
Despite their disagreements, Grey later emphasized that Swayze cared about her and was supportive. Their complicated relationship ultimately produced the very chemistry that audiences remember.
