However, the film audiences know today was almost very different. Several behind-the-scenes decisions dramatically changed the movie and helped shape its lasting success.
One of the biggest surprises is that the original script, titled 3,000, was much darker. Instead of a lighthearted romance, it was written as a gritty drama about class differences and survival in Los Angeles. The original ending was far from happy, with the two main characters going their separate ways. When Walt Disney Pictures became involved through its label Touchstone Pictures, the story was reworked into a more uplifting romantic comedy.
Casting also played a major role in the film’s transformation. Several well-known actors were considered for the lead roles before Roberts and Gere were selected. Roberts’ charm and natural chemistry during auditions convinced producers she was perfect for Vivian. Gere initially hesitated to accept the role but eventually agreed after discussions with Roberts and the filmmakers.
Another memorable change involved the famous jewelry box scene. The moment when Gere snaps the box shut on Roberts’ fingers was completely improvised as a playful joke. Roberts’ genuine laugh was so authentic that the filmmakers kept it in the final cut, creating one of the movie’s most iconic moments.
